BlueSpace: Building on the Use of Spatial Multiplexing 5G Networks Infrastructure and Showcasing Advanced technologies and Networking Capabilities
BlueSpace addresses the challenges of increased capacity, scalability, manageability, resource allocation of 5G networks by adopting a pragmatic yet disruptive and future proof approach. The core concept of this project is exploiting the added value of Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) in the Radio Access Network (RAN) with efficient optical beamforming interface for the pragmatic Ka-band wireless transmission band. BlueSpace proposition offers unrivalled characteristics that include:
- Increased bandwidth using massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) with the fiber medium by exploiting space diversity in the RF domain with efficient beam-steering in the photonic domain
- A compact infrastructure that is reconfigurable by means of Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigms
- Full integration with existing approaches for access networks such as Passive Optical Networks (PONs).
Role of EULAMBIA:
- Leads the activities related to the design and development of the Analog Radio-over-Fiber (ARoF) transceivers.

Secure and Trusted Paradigm for Interoperable eHealth Services
KONFIDO is a H2020 project that aims to leverage proven tools and procedures, as well as novel approaches and cutting edge technology, in view of creating a scalable and holistic paradigm for secure inner- and cross-border exchange, storage and overall handling of healthcare data in a legal and ethical way both at national and European levels.
The following scenario illustrates a typical use of KONFIDO’s framework:
Kenneth is a 65-year-old citizen from Copenhagen, Denmark, who suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and chronic heart failure as comorbid condition. Kenneth is planning to spend 10 days in Barcelona, Spain, with his family but is concerned about a potential exacerbation. His doctor informs him that thanks to the technology developed in KONFIDO, which has been deployed nationally in both Denmark and Spain, he can securely grant access to healthcare professionals in Barcelona to view part of his medical record.
In this case, Kenneth and the healthcare professionals in Barcelona can authenticate themselves with their national issued eID. Using KONFIDO’s novel security mechanisms, Kenneth can be confident that data generated from any potential clinical intervention in Barcelona, including data coming from the use of a self-management mHealth application, will be securely transmitted and registered to his medical record in Denmark. This information will also be securely shared with the Danish specialist that is taking care of Kenneth, who can follow-up the incident.

SMILE proposes a novel mobility concept by designing, implementing and evaluating in relevant environments (TRL6) prototype management architecture, for the accurate verification, automated control, monitoring and optimization of people’ flows at Land Border Infrastructures. It leverages the capabilities of the smart mobile devices in biometric control for secure and trusted authentication, and elaborates on their exploitation as part of a multimodal biometric verification process that supplements / complements existing approaches.
Furthermore, SMILE’s mobility concept builds upon Private Cloud Infrastructure technologies which communicate with remote SMILE handhelds through a secure gateway. SMILE ecosystem will target EU land borders which will be the beneficiaries of the proposed solutions. In fact, the proposed technology and business framework developed in SMILE will be validated through pan-European demonstrations in 3 BCPs. The operational properties of the technologies and overall solution will be validated and evaluated against cost, performance, effectiveness and usability indicators.
Use cases will be supported by different architectural designs, which will be classified according to the operation mode. BCPs participating in the project’s pilots will deploy and evaluate the solution at business as usual and emergency situations across various status operations. SMILE aims to:
- minimise the exposure of BCPs to security risks and threats, and
- help them successfully respond to security incidents, while relieving them from all unnecessary and costly efforts of identifying, acquiring and using the appropriate technology.
To this CNBP, HBP & RBP BCP partners will deploy and validate the proposed secure & reliable ecosystem in two use cases (Romania Bulgaria), in which the adaptation of SMILE framework to focused applications will be performed.
